A Closer Look at Motorcycle Wheelies

Everything you need to know about the mechanics of a wheelie.

Motorcycle wheelies are something that you’re going to see or two from time to time. But what’s really going on when you do a wheelie?

Ari Henning of Revzilla asks this question and gets into the nitty gritty details in his latest installment of The Shop Manual for the company’s YouTube channel.

It’s a fun and interesting topic, and as usual, Ari takes things a step beyond the typical motorcyclist. Watch the video above.

The first thing to know is that it’s a fairly complex thing to achieve. The Ari talks with a couple of professors who touch on the complexity of the variables at play during a wheelie.

Then he gets into the real fun stuff of actually popping the front wheel off the ground. He explains what’s happening to the bike as you get on the throttle.

As Ari notes, all aspects of the motorcycle impact how it wheelies. Shorter wheelbase bikes with a lighter curb weight are going to wheelie more easily than longer wheelbase a heavier curb weight.
