If you’ve paid attention to the American motorcycle market, you’ve probably noticed Indian Motorcycle’s bikes.
The American company has some of the best bikes, challenging Harley-Davidson at its own game, but are Indian’s bikes made in the USA?
Let’s take a closer look at this.
Indian Motorcycle, a Brief History
Indian Motorcycle is the first American motorcycle company. It opened its doors in 1901, just a couple of years before Harley-Davidson did.
The company saw great success both in racing and in terms of popularity with the public. It was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the entire world.
The company went defunct in the 1950s but was brought back in 2011 by Polaris Industries. Since being brought back, the company has been gaining ground in the industry.
Where Are Indian Motorcycles Made?
According to the company, 550 employees make Indian Motorcycle’s bikes in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
The Indian Motorcycle factory offers tours if you would like to see the assembly line working. On the tour, you’ll learn all about the process of the bikes being built and some of the more interesting aspects of the factory.
The guided tours happen Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm (CST). There are some holidays the factory will not be open.
Are All of the Bikes Sold Worldwide Made in America?
Yes. All motorcycles sold by Indian are made in America.
Polaris Industries, the parent company of Indian Motorcycle, does have a factory in Opole, Poland. It opened in 2014 and has 500 employees.
According to The Drive, despite Polaris building some of its off-road vehicles in Poland, it doesn’t build motorcycles at that factory.
There have been discussions of Indian motorcycles that are sold in Europe being built at this plant in Poland, but as of yet, this has not happened. So, until it does, every single motorcycle that Indian makes is made in the USA.
