Tim James, Board President of Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR), has been named the 2024 AMA Motorcyclist of the Year, recognized for his transformative work in the adventure and dual-sport motorcycling world. Under his leadership, BDR has expanded its mission of creating and maintaining off-highway routes while uplifting rural economies across the United States.
“Tim’s work with BDR has been nothing short of remarkable,” said AMA Chairman Russ Ehnes. “He’s not only enhanced recreational opportunities but also championed motorcycling as a force for good in remote communities.”
Tim James and BDR Do Amazing Work for Motorcyclists and Rural Economies
BDR, a non-profit organization, has generated over $60 million in out-of-state tourism dollars for small towns, alongside millions in motorcycle-related sales, according to a 2022 study. With 13 sprawling routes and six shorter BDR-X routes across the U.S., BDR plans to expand into Canada and Mexico while maintaining its gold-standard reputation.
James, who found camaraderie and purpose in BDR’s mission, sees the organization as more than route mapping. “We’re making a real difference—supporting small towns, creating riding opportunities, and fostering rider education,” he said.
As BDR celebrates 15 years, James looks to the future: “We’re just getting started.” For more, visit ridebdr.com.
