Tim James Named 2024 AMA Motorcyclist of the Year

Tim James, Board President of Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR), has been named the 2024 AMA Motorcyclist of the Year, recognized for his transformative work in the adventure and dual-sport motorcycling world. Under his leadership, BDR has expanded its mission of creating and maintaining off-highway routes while uplifting rural economies across the United States.

“Tim’s work with BDR has been nothing short of remarkable,” said AMA Chairman Russ Ehnes. “He’s not only enhanced recreational opportunities but also championed motorcycling as a force for good in remote communities.”

Mary McGee, AKA Motorcycle Mary, Passes Away (1936-2024)

Mary McGee, a trailblazing figure in motorsports, has passed away at 87, leaving behind an enduring legacy that shattered gender barriers and inspired generations.

McGee was the first person to solo the Baja 500 on a motorcycle in 1972, cementing her status as a legend in the male-dominated world of off-road racing. But her journey began long before that.

Malcolm Smith: The Hall of Famer Bids Farewell (1942–2024)

The motorcycling world lost one of its brightest ambassadors as Malcolm Smith, the legendary AMA Hall of Famer, passed away at 83 from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Smith, a true polymath of the sport, wore many hats: racer, ISDT gold medalist, businessman, actor, philanthropist, and, above all, a champion for motorcycling.
