Ducati has surprised us all with a new generation of its signature V-Twin, defying predictions of its retirement. This fresh V2 engine, now lighter at just 120 pounds, shows Ducati’s unyielding commitment to the design that has fueled their success, yielding over 400 race wins and 1,000 podiums.
The New Ducati V2 Engine Ushers In a New Era
With a reduced 890cc displacement, it trades the pure brawn of its 955cc Superquadro predecessor for efficiency, revving to an impressive 11,350 rpm and delivering a punchy 120 horsepower. This power package comes with a 13.5:1 compression ratio, a notable uptick that ensures smooth power across the rev range.
In a bold move, Ducati has ditched its classic desmodromic valve system, opting instead for valve springs that ease maintenance and stretch the time between valve checks to a generous 18,000 miles. Ducati’s IVT (Intake Variable Timing) system takes center stage, adjusting valve timing for smooth low-end torque and unrelenting power up top.
Ducati’s attention to detail extends to Diamond-Like Carbon-coated rocker arms, hollow valve stems, and a compact design that neatly tucks vital parts—like the water pump and heat exchanger—into the engine’s “V,” which improves aesthetics for exposed-engine models.
With a dedicated Quick Shift 2.0 and adaptable gearing and power delivery, this V2 is ready for anything, from high-speed sportbikes to rugged adventure models. The debut of Ducati’s V2-powered motorcycles is set for November 5. Ducati’s V-Twin legacy rolls on, now lighter, versatile, and finely tuned for a new era.
