BMW’s new R 12 S is a nostalgic nod to the iconic R 90 S of 1973, blending retro aesthetics with modern engineering.
Arriving in Q1 2025 with a price tag of $21,590, the R 12 S shares its foundation with the R 12 nineT but stands out with its heritage-inspired design and fairing. It’s a truly beautiful motorcycle and a good addition to BMW’s lineup.
The 2025 BMW R 12 S Brings Retro Cool
The classic R 90 S was renowned as the first production motorcycle with a handlebar fairing, which made waves in the 1970s. Its 900cc air-cooled Boxer engine delivered 67 hp and a 124 mph top speed, earning its place in racing history with Steve McLaughlin’s 1976 AMA Superbike victory.
The R 12 S channels this legacy with Lava Orange Metallic paint, brushed aluminum accents, and red pinstriping—a tribute to the 1975 R 90 S Daytona Orange.
Mechanically, the R 12 S mirrors the R nineT, powered by a 1,170cc air/oil-cooled Boxer engine producing 109 hp at 7,000 rpm and 85 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm.
It features a six-speed gearbox, a single-disk dry clutch, and a cardan shaft drive. Suspension remains unchanged, with a 45mm adjustable inverted fork and Paralever rear suspension.
Modern touches include ABS Pro, heated grips, cruise control, and BMW’s Shift Assistant Pro.
Exclusive Option 719 Classic II wheels add a vintage flair. For fans of timeless design paired with current tech, the R 12 S is both a heartfelt tribute and a thrilling ride. For a closer look, check out the bike on BMW’s website.
