This Can-Am Electric Motorcycle Patent Has Everyone Scratching Their Heads

Can-Am patent

Can-Am’s electrified journey took a curious turn with a new patent that might reveal their next motorcycle. I know the Canadian brand has plans for at least two more platforms using its liquid-cooled electric powertrain, but this one’s got everyone scratching their heads.

At first glance, the design suggests a flat tracker. Compared to Can-Am’s Pulse, this concept sports a steeper rake, with controls positioned low and forward. The handlebars are wide and angled, evoking a retro dirt track vibe. Yet, there’s room for interpretation.

The Can-Am Electric Motorcycle Patent Confounds Instead of Illuminates

The fine folks at RideApart (linked below) seem to be torn on what this model could be, and I’m not quite sure either.

RideApart’s Executive Editor, Jonathon Klein, sees a different beast altogether—a Ducati Streetfighter-esque urban machine, built for hooligan antics rather than flat-track heroics. The disagreement underscores how a single design can spark wildly different takes in the motorcycle world.

But the debate doesn’t stop at aesthetics. Buried in the patent is a tantalizing hint about functionality: a front wheel “rotationally connected to the battery pack housing.” Does this suggest an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system? Or is it simply a regenerative braking feature?

While AWD would be a groundbreaking twist for an electric motorcycle, the regenerative braking theory feels more plausible. Yet even that’s up for debate—50/50 might be too generous when deciphering Can-Am’s cryptic patent language.

The possibilities expand the more you look at this thing. Could Can-Am be crafting something entirely new—a hybrid machine that bridges urban agility with off-road capability? The patent’s mention of cooling plates and load distribution suggests serious engineering aimed at versatility, not just sleek design.

One thing is clear: Can-Am’s next electric bike isn’t just another Pulse clone. The company seems poised to shake up the electric motorcycle market with a machine that blurs the lines between categories.

Whether it’s a modern flat tracker, a street hooligan, or something entirely unexpected, this bike will demand attention. I’ll be watching closely to see what Can-Am comes out with. The company is known for pushing the envelope and trying something new, so I think this bike could potentially be a revolutionary product, but time will tell.
