The AGV Life Impacto Program Brings Recycling to Motorcycle Gear

AGV recycled helmets

Dainese, the owner of AGV Helmets, has introduced an innovative recycling program called Life Impacto to address the waste generated by discarded motorcycle helmets. Helmets, typically replaced every 5-7 years, contribute significantly to waste.

Life Impacto aims to create a sustainable, circular process using selective dissolution recycling, developed in collaboration with five Italian companies, including Innovandoo, Re-sport, and the Università di Bologna.

AGV Life Impacto’s Recycling Program Could Change Things

This process relies on an advanced recycling plant capable of separating key materials like ABS, EPS, and PC from used helmets. These materials are then repurposed to manufacture new helmets or other eco-friendly products. Dainese claims the method significantly reduces waste and recovers raw materials effectively.

For instance, recycling 5,000 helmets yields 3,700 kilograms of ABS, 1,056 kilograms of EPS, and 637 kilograms of PC. Additionally, it cuts CO2 emissions and electricity and water consumption by over 50%.

While the environmental benefits are substantial, concerns remain about consumer acceptance of helmets made from recycled materials, despite meeting safety standards. It will be interesting to see what happens with this.
