Here’s a look at “Melissa,” a custom 1998 Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Chopper, crafted by Pittsburgh musician Dan Ford.
This machine, brought to life just in time for the Glory Daze event, embodies the classic Sportster chopper aesthetic: a flame-adorned tank, a distinctive custom sissy bar, and a robust springer front end. Its black and yellow color scheme is a clear nod to its Pittsburgh origins.

Ford’s lifelong fascination with motorcycles, deeply influenced by his father and the biker culture he experienced, led him to choose a chopper project, drawn by the hands-on building experience it offered.
The process involved significant frame modification, while the original engine and primary drive were retained. Many other components were sourced from TC Bros and Moto Iron. Fabrication work, including the hardtail and custom sissy bar, was handled by Uptahn Metalworks, with Tyler Elliott of TE Customs applying the paintwork.

The frame received a durable powder-coat finish. The bike’s moniker, “Melissa,” is a tribute to a record by one of Ford’s favorite bands, Mercyful Fate.
Ford, a musician active in Pittsburgh for over three decades, also shared his favorite local riding routes and advice for new riders, emphasizing the importance of research, seeking out reputable shops, and building a motorcycle that truly brings personal satisfaction.
