10 Reasons Why Tapoco Lodge Should Be Your Tail of the Dragon HQ

The front of Tapoco Lodge

The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap boasts a reputation as the road to ride or drive for motoring enthusiasts. Recently, I had a chance to visit America’s number one motorcycling and sports car road. And I stayed at the historic Tapoco Lodge in Robbinsville, North Carolina.

This lodge is a mere few minutes from Deals Gap and the start of the Tail of the Dragon, and if I were to visit the area again (I sincerely hope I will get to sometime soon), I would stay here again.

Heck, I’m thinking of making this a regular stay once a year. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable place to spend some time. Even if I weren’t a motoring nut like I am, I’d stay at Tapoco.

Luckily, I am a nut who loves vehicles, especially motorcycles, and I got to ride my 2019 Honda Rebel down there. So, let me tell you why this lodge has so captivated my enthusiasm.

1. Located on US 129 – The Home of the Tail of the Dragon

Tapoco Lodge sits directly on US 129. That is the road the Tail of the Dragon is on. For those who don’t know, the Tail of the Dragon is an 11-mile stretch boasting 318 curves. In other words, it’s a motorcyclist’s paradise.

The proximity of the lodge means you can roll out of bed and onto one of America’s most thrilling roads without delay. It’s also secluded enough, around a couple of bends from Deals Gap and some of the venues that cater to motorcyclists and car enthusiasts. There are other places to stay around there, but I’m not sure I’d give them a look. Tapoco is a cut above the rest.

2. A Cherished Retreat Since 1930

Established in 1930 by the Tallassee Power Company to house workers near the Cheoah Dam, Tapoco Lodge has become a beloved mountain retreat for travelers of all sorts.

Its rich history is evident in its Colonial Revival architecture and timeless charm. I’d seen pictures of the lodge online, but I have to be honest, it looks better in person. It’s literally on the Cheoah River. You can sit at the outdoor bar (more on that later) and listen to the water rush past and take in the beautiful natural views.

3. Close to the Cherohala Skyway

Beyond the Tail of the Dragon, Tapoco Lodge is located near the Cherohala Skyway, a 43-mile National Scenic Byway known for its sweeping curves and breathtaking vistas.

This is another must-ride for any motorcycle enthusiast. The Tail of the Dragon is the lure that pulls you into the area, but the Cherohala Skyway is the hook that keeps you there. It’s simply gorgeous.

4. Luxurious and Cozy Accommodations

Tapoco’s well-appointed lodge suites, lodge rooms, or cabins are there for you once you’ve exhausted yourself driving (or doing whatever else you find in the area).

The rooms have locally sourced wood interiors, plush bedding, and great views. My room offered a nice blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. I expect the others would follow a similar format. I’ve been in bigger hotel rooms, but I can’t think of any more charming.

5. Two On-Site Restaurants to Satisfy Every Palate

Dining at Tapoco is an experience in itself. The Tapoco Tavern offers riverside seating (this is the outdoor bar I mentioned before) with a menu featuring locally sourced trout, aged steaks, and their renowned brick oven pizza. There’s also an outdoor bar menu with burgers and regular pub fare. There is an indoor, fully-stocked bar (no food at the indoor bar to my knowledge) as well.

For an even more refined dining experience, the Cheoah Dining Room serves seasonal dishes in an elegant setting. It’s also the location to get breakfast and a good cup of coffee in the morning.

6. A Hub for Outdoor Activities

Tapoco Lodge might be a motorcycle haven, but it isn’t just for riders. The 120-acre property boasts groomed hiking trails, riverbank fire pits, and access to the Cheoah River for fly fishing. If I’d had more time during my stay, I would have loved to fly fish. (An activity I will have to save for next time.)

Whether you’re into mountain biking, kayaking, or simply soaking in nature, there’s something for everyone. Birdwatching seems to be especially popular. The room even came with a pair of binoculars and some literature on birdwatching.

7. Accommodates Groups with Ease

Planning a group ride or family reunion? What about a wedding? Tapoco Lodge offers 18 cozy cabin rooms, 11 luxury lodge rooms, and 2 spacious off-site homes.

It can accommodate up to 100 guests. With ample dining and meeting spaces, it’s a great option for an event you want to have in the area. It’s also very picturesque. Social media addicts and influencers, eat your hearts out.

8. Proximity to More Than Just Motoring Thrills

Adventure seekers will appreciate the lodge’s closeness to whitewater rafting on the Cheoah River and Nantahala River, zip-lining adventures, and kayaking excursions.

It’s a haven for those looking to mix high-octane fun with natural beauty. My only gripe about my stay was that I didn’t plan well enough to be able to take advantage of more of the opportunities in the area. (I guess I’ll just have to come back.)

9. On-Site Spa and Ample Amenities

After a day of exploration, unwind with a massage at the lodge’s spa, offering treatments like the Essential Massage and Elevated Massage. I did not partake in the spa offerings, but I was very tempted.

There’s also a nice little cigar lounge. I’m not much of a cigar smoker these days, but it’s a welcome addition to the property. You’ll also find pickleball courts and the Tin Can Theater—perfect for presentations, group activities, and weddings or other special events—on the property.

10. Lake Santeetlah Is Just Around the Corner

A short drive from the lodge, Lake Santeetlah offers waters that are excellent for boating, fishing, or a peaceful picnic by the shore. Surrounded by national forests, it’s a serene spot to connect with nature or get wet in whatever way you choose.

If you’re thinking of visiting the Deals Gap area, check out Tapoco Lodge. You’ll be glad you did.
