Indiana-based Janus Motorcycles has officially selected Hartford Industrial of Taiwan as its new engine supplier for future production runs of its flagship Halcyon 450, shifting its supply chain away from its previous Chinese-built powerplant.
When Janus originally introduced the Halcyon 450 platform, it sourced a 445cc air-and-oil-cooled single-cylinder motor designed by Italian brand SWM, which produced the engine through manufacturing ties in China via the Shineray Group.
A New Engine Supplier Is Hopefully a Good Thing
The mechanical design itself was loosely based on a proven, classical Honda single-cylinder architecture.
Following multi-year production and supply-chain friction surrounding that engine platform, Janus sought a new long-term manufacturing partner to streamline supply lines, improve overall quality control, and ensure production consistency.
Sourcing from Hartford Industrial shifts the country of origin for the core powerplant from China to Taiwan.
To finalize the transition, Janus CEO Richard Worsham visited Hartford’s headquarters in Taiwan to oversee dyno testing, ECU calibration, and EPA emissions compliance testing ahead of full production.
The new Hartford engine maintains the core mechanical characteristics that define the Halcyon 450 line, featuring an approachable, air-and-oil-cooled single-cylinder layout paired with electronic fuel injection and simple, owner-serviceable mechanics capable of sustained highway speeds.
