Master Misao Araki of Auto Magic, one of Japan’s most influential custom workshops, has transformed a Kawasaki Z1 into a masterpiece of engineering that bridges the gap between aerospace precision and classic superbike style.

Known for pioneering the process of obtaining government permits for radical modifications, Araki-san utilized 38 years of experience to “future-proof” this machine. The build is centered around a revolutionary modular frame concept designed to address the structural decay common in 40-year-old motorcycles while allowing for total adaptability.

This Custom Kawasaki Z1 Is a True Reimagination

The core of the build is a total chassis reconstruction. Using CAD and laser measurement, Auto Magic mapped the Z1’s original frame before splitting it into sections and re-engineering it in a custom jig.

This unique process allowed them to create a modular lower cradle that can be unbolted and swapped, enabling the bike to evolve with future engine regulations or upgrades. The frame is reinforced with custom gussets and aligned specifically for modern 17-inch wheels and a bespoke aluminum swingarm, ensuring the bike handles with modern-day rigidity and precision.

Performance is equally extreme, featuring a 1200cc Wiseco big-bore engine equipped with a Yoshimura ST-2 cam and Keihin FCR carburetors. The bike is outfitted with premium track-ready hardware, including Öhlins suspension, Brembo brakes, and lightweight carbon fiber wheels from Thyssenkrupp.

A signature Auto Magic hand-bent titanium exhaust flows elegantly along the engine, completing a machine that Araki-san describes as “Tamaranai” (irresistible)—a motorcycle that doesn’t just restore the past but re-engineers it for the future.
