Zero Motorcycles Adds DC Fast Charging to Bikes Back to 2022

Zero Motorcycles Adds DC Fast Charging to Bikes Back to 2022 1

Zero Motorcycles has confirmed that Level 3 DC fast charging is coming to its Street and Dual Sport lineup in late 2027. The bigger news is that the CCS port and charging module will also be retrofittable on models dating back to 2022.

That means thousands of existing Zero owners could upgrade their bikes rather than buying new ones to get faster charging. The system targets a 20 to 80 percent charge in under 30 minutes, a meaningful jump from the current Rapid Charge System’s 45-minute window.

A Long-Awaited Fix

For years, riders have asked Zero to add DC fast charging while competitors like Energica and LiveWire already offered it. CEO Pierre-Martin Bos said the company listened and chose to make the module available as an accessory on relevant 2022 and newer motorcycles rather than limiting it to future models.

The retrofit applies to the S, SR, SR/S, SR/F, DS, DSR, and DSR/X equipped with the Cypher III operating system. Zero’s current Level 2 Rapid Charge System can be upgraded from 6.6 kW to 12.6 kW through a dealer, cutting 20 to 80 percent charge times to under 45 minutes.

Level 3 DC fast charging builds on that foundation, working with battery capacities up to 17.3 kWh.

What This Means for Riders

DC fast charging infrastructure continues to expand across Europe and North America, making this announcement more practical than it would have been even two years ago. More compatible charging stations means more route options for Zero owners who want to use their bikes for longer weekend rides rather than just commuting.

I’ve always felt that charging speed matters most on the rides where you’re far from home.

Pricing, final charging specifications, and exact availability dates have not been announced yet. Zero says additional details will come as development continues.

If the retrofit works as promised, it could extend the usable life of 2022 and newer Zero motorcycles, which already rank among the best electric commuter motorcycles available today. That alone makes this one of the more significant electric motorcycle announcements this year.
