The fine gents across the pond at Motorcycle News (MCN) recently pit the reigning middleweight champion, the Yamaha MT-09 SP, against the long-awaited challenger, the KTM 990 Duke R.
This video (included below) is a great comparison piece that’s worth a watch. I’ll also provide my own opinion on these two awesome bikes below.

Performance Breakdown
- The Yamaha Experience: The MT-09 SP is the “friendly firecracker.” It’s noted for its incredibly wide operating window, making it just as capable of a trip to the shops as a aggressive track day [00:06:54]. The triple engine offers a soulful soundtrack and the most refined throttle and gearbox in the class [00:06:31].
- The KTM Experience: The 990 Duke R is “uncompromisingly aggressive.” It sits 15mm higher than the standard Duke, giving it massive ground clearance and hyper-fast steering [00:03:11]. It feels like a “practical supermoto” that only wants to go fast, but its stiff suspension and track-biased tires make it difficult to live with in the rain or cold [00:11:55], [00:13:36].
The Verdict
Despite the KTM being the more “extreme” and powerful machine, MCN crown the Yamaha MT-09 SP the winner [00:17:12]. The Yamaha’s accessibility, superior road tires, and better value for money make it the more effective tool for 90% of riders.
The KTM is the ultimate “Sunday morning scratcher” for pure adrenaline, but it is too niche to take the title of best all-rounder [00:16:19], [00:17:00].
My Thoughts on This Match-Up
KTM is “nickel-and-diming” its way out of first place.
The 990 Duke R is objectively a masterpiece of engineering, but KTM has a massive marketing problem: The “Demo Mode.”
Selling a bike for £13,000 and then telling the owner they have to pay another £1,000 after 900 miles to keep the electronics they’ve already been using is the motorcycle equivalent of “DLC” in video games, and it’s insulting.
Here’s the hot take: The Yamaha doesn’t win because it’s a better bike; it wins because it doesn’t treat its owners like a subscription service. When you buy an SP, you get the Öhlins, you get the cruise control, and you get the modes. Period.
KTM’s “Ready to Race” slogan is starting to feel like “Ready to Recharge Your Credit Card.” Until they stop the software paywalls, they will keep losing to bikes that offer a “complete” experience out of the crate. If you’re buying the KTM, you’re paying a “fun tax” that just doesn’t exist on the Yamaha.
