Motocross Bikes Are Getting More Aerodynamic

An interesting use of aerodynamics for off-road bikes.

Yamaha patents its off-road aerodynamic designs. This is the patent drawing.

MotoGP bikes aren’t the only machines that can benefit from advanced aerodynamics. More and more special aerodynamic features are being found on motocross and dirt bikes, helping to improve performance.

Wind Tunnel Testing for Motocross Bikes Improve Aerodynamic Performance

According to Cycle World, Yamaha recently filed a patent application in Japan for some motocross aerodynamic designs.

The idea here is not downforce but cooling. Yamaha wants to better direct air for cooling purposes.

If they could do this right, they could potentially make the bikes smaller and lighter and still get super-impressive performance.

The company hopes to better direct air over the radiators by using winglets to either side of the bike. On off-road bikes, there are two radiators mounted high on the front of the bike, this would help with cooling and those radiators could potentially be smaller.

It’s an exciting idea and one that honestly makes a lot of sense. It will be interesting if this will also be a solution for street motorcycles. I don’t see why it wouldn’t, especially for dual-sport machines.
