BMW Motorrad CEO Markus Flasch just did something most motorcycle executives would never do. He hopped on an uncamouflaged prototype of the upcoming R20 and rode it through a promotional video with no zebra wrap, no strategic tape, no disguise of any kind.
The video is part of a new BMW series called “The Ones Who Ride,” released on September 4. Flasch talks about riding, racing, and motorcycle culture for about ten minutes. Then the R20 appears on screen, looking far more finished than a concept bike has any right to.
From Pink Concept to Black Prototype
BMW first showed the R20 Concept at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May 2024. The original bike was pink, stripped down, and built around a massive air- and oil-cooled boxer engine. The idea was to take the biggest boxer BMW has ever built and remove everything that didn’t need to be there.
The prototype in the video is black, and it has clearly evolved. The open intake trumpets are gone, replaced by a closed airbox under the solo saddle. The oversized ISR six-piston brake calipers have been swapped for conventional four-piston BMW units. The exhaust has moved from megaphone end cans to a lower-mounted system that likely houses a catalytic converter.
An oil cooler and steering damper have been added. The rear tire shrank from a 200/55 to a 190/55. Spoked front wheel, cast rear wheel, and a 1,550mm wheelbase carry over from the concept. This is a motorcycle being prepared for type approval, not a design study.
What Flasch Said About the Timeline
“The torque is amazing. The sound is amazing,” Flasch says in the video. He also mentions wanting to accelerate the production schedule. Previous reports pegged series production for March 2028. Flasch’s comments suggest 2027 is now in play.
The engine is an enlarged version of the R 18’s Big Boxer, growing from 1,802cc to roughly 2,000cc. Industry observers expect at least 120 horsepower and 180 to 200 Nm of torque. BMW hasn’t confirmed any specifications.
EICMA in November is the most likely stage for a full reveal with specs and pricing. Six near-production prototypes appeared in a May photo, and spy shots surfaced in August from testing in Germany and southern France.
