The Yamaha XT500 restomod, built by Purpose Built Moto (PBM) and affectionately called the “VMX Scrambler,” is a tribute that blends the iconic dual-sport’s classic charm with aggressive vintage motocross and scrambler styling and modern reliability.
The aesthetic maintains the XT500’s DNA but features PBM’s signature style, including a modified factory fuel tank, custom aluminum bodywork, and a distinctive yellow and black ‘speed block’ paint scheme inspired by the 1976 Yamaha YZ400.

The cockpit is modernized with a Daytona DEVA digital gauge and integrated lighting components.
To make the legendary “thumper” more capable, PBM gave the engine a complete overhaul, including a high-compression big bore, a ported and polished head, a hot cam, and a Mikuni pumper carburetor, all breathing through a custom high-flow exhaust.

The most significant functional upgrade is the addition of a electric start kit, which solves the XT500’s notoriously difficult kick-starting ritual.
The chassis was fully modernized with KX450F front forks (lowered and re-valved) and YSS rear shocks, mounted to a powder-coated frame, resulting in a thoroughly capable and effortlessly cool machine.
