Could ‘Plug and Charge’ Be the Answer for Electric Motorcycles?

Ah, the promise of electric motorcycles: silent, clean, and oh-so-modern. But behind the glossy marketing lies a dirty little secret—the charging experience.

For anyone who’s wrestled with apps, accounts, and QR codes just to juice up their eco-appliance, you’ll know what I mean. Charging can be a pain. But now, there may be a good solution.

Plug and Charge—A Novel Idea for Charging

Enter “Plug and Charge,” a protocol that aims to make charging as simple as plugging in—or as simple as it should be.

Backed by the Biden administration and key players in the EV world, this tech lets your car talk to the charger—no apps, no codes, just juice and go. Sounds perfect, right? Well, not so fast.

For Plug and Charge to work, automakers and charging networks must play nice, and every vehicle will need compatible software. The $1.5 million development cost is just the start.

Someday you’ll be able to charge your Zero motorcycle just about anywhere.

Inevitably, the price tag will trickle down to consumers. But if this cuts the hassle and makes charging as seamless as it should’ve been all along, maybe, just maybe, it’s worth it.

Obviously, this will roll out with electric cars and trucks in mind first, but bikes and motorcycles should benefit too. It’s a step in the right direction if electric is really going to be a big part of our future.
