The motorcycling world lost one of its brightest ambassadors as Malcolm Smith, the legendary AMA Hall of Famer, passed away at 83 from complications of Parkinson’s disease.
Smith, a true polymath of the sport, wore many hats: racer, ISDT gold medalist, businessman, actor, philanthropist, and, above all, a champion for motorcycling.
Born on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, in 1941, Smith built a life around two wheels that inspired countless enthusiasts. Whether wrenching in his shop, winning races, or advocating for the sport, he radiated a passion that connected him to riders everywhere.
Smith passed peacefully at home in Riverside, California, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife Joyce, four children, and a host of grandchildren who carry on his legacy, many already riding motorcycles.
AMA President Rob Dingman captured it best: “Malcolm embodied everything good about motorcycling — excelling in competition, giving back selflessly, and doing it all with a grin.”
Funeral details are pending, but the family requests donations to the Malcolm Smith Motorsports Foundation, supporting the children of Baja.
Malcolm once wrote, “Where it will end, no one knows… but I’ll enjoy every minute, with a smile.” He did just that. Godspeed, Malcolm. The road ahead is brighter for having known you.
