New Study: 1 in 5 Motorcycle Riders are Women

A shift in motorcycle ownership makes some in the industry take note.

Historically, men have dominated the motorcycle scene. Now it seems Women motorcyclists are becoming more common.

A new study performed by the Motorcycle Industry Council showed that the number of women riders is on the rise.

That increase could mean motorcycle manufacturers need to adjust their focus in the future.

Chicks Dig Bikes, Too

According to the Motorcycle Industry Council, about 19 percent of motorcyclists are women, regardless of age.

That’s an increase of five percent from 2014 and a jump of nine percentage points from 2009, according to Motorcyclist.

That trend points out that women motorcycle ownership is on the rise and has been for several years.

The council also noted how much money women riders spend ($77 more than men).

The council noted that the availability of more gear, clothing, and equipment has likely contributed to the rise.

There are a variety of other factors, too. It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that women being more equal in society means more of them will take up activities like motorcycling, which used to be seen almost exclusively as a man’s activity.

This is a good thing for all motorcyclists. More riders mean there will be more opportunities to push the right legislation and get a greater variety of gear and equipment.
